Electrical Safety First have created a great short cartoon to reinforce the importance of being a responsible landlord. Titled ‘Scrooge, The Bad Landlord’, it shows what could happen if the electrics in you home aren’t properly looked after.

Your landlord is responsible for electrical wiring, repairs to electrical appliances, fires and heaters, door entry systems, sockets, switches and lighting. During your tenancy all electrical equipment installed or provided by your landlord must be safe and maintained throughout your time there.

While there is no legal requirement to perform an annual safety check, it is recommended that your landlord does schedule regular checks. It’s also your landlord’s legal requirement to ensure that you have a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm in your home. If they don’t they could face a hefty fine. The only thing your landlord isn’t responsible for is your own electrical appliances.

Be safe this Christmas – if you are concerned about about electrics or gas in your home contact your landlord immediately.
